AL East Update: ...and they're in SECOND??? Edition
The Twins are 36-48. They're 11.5 games out of first. AND THEY'RE IN SECOND PLACE.
I...I can't even begin to fathom how weird and wrong that is. Like...second place usually signifies "okay, you could do better, but you're still pretty good." None of what is going on in Minneapolis is particularly good. They literally have 4 good players- Jose Berrios, Kyle Gibson, Eddie Rosario and Eduardo Escobar. And...if you want to count Brian Dozier because he's hit a few home runs, sure. I won't stop you.
But the rest of the team is just either overhyped players disappointing people, or underdeveloped players disappointing people. And everybody else who could be doing well is injured. Like the Mets, which I just covered yesterday, the injuries are destroying what could be an alright team, and the next youth movement is forced to kick in earlier than they'd need to. Mitch Garver, Ehire Adrianza, Jake Cave. All pushed in when they might not need to be. And yeah, Garver is BEGINNING to learn the ropes of being an everyday catcher, and some callups like Cave and Willians Astudillo are promising enough in early stages, but this team is a mishmash of people at various stages of their career, and the team's being tugged all these different ways.
And even if they do get a little better, if they improve once some people get thrown back into the lineup...I still don't think they'll be able to take the Indians. There's a reason the Indians are way out in front...and there's a reason the Twins are that far behind. But, the Twins have taken advantage of a skid by the Tigers, and have weaseled their way into second. They could go on a tear, but only if they prioritize, and figure out what kind of team they want to be.
As is, however? It's pretty dire.
Coming Tomorrow- They won several games in a row last week. Yes, they're still in last, but...they're not so bad anymore, I think.
