Upon his promotion to the major leagues last year, Dereck Rodriguez became the...inadvertent best son of an MLB hall of famer in the major leagues, since that...other son of a hall of famer decided not to join the Jays last year.
D-Rod, as I can only imagine he's been dubbed, has gotten off to a decent start with 12 strikeouts in his first three starts, and having the lowest WHIP on the team thus far. The Giants are far from perfect right now, and no one especially thought they'd be such, but D-Rod is part of a surprisingly reliable rotation of him, MadBum, Derek Holland, Jeff Samardzija and Drew Pomeranz. Only Rodriguez has an ERA higher than 4. Hell, Shark might be having his best year since the Cubs year that made him great.
Plus, the addition of Kevin Pillar has finally given the outfield some life, as Pillar is finally playing like he did in 2017. He does seem to be one of the few members of this lineup with any positive momentum (I mean, Panda's doing great but he's mostly off the bench), but everyone else seems to be wanting to follow suit. I mean, Buster Posey looks pretty human this year, which is kind of sad.
The silver lining is that this is not a last-place team, and these Giants have gotten the better of the Rockies on a few occasions. Granted, they're not GREAT, and probably won't be until a lot of these contracts expire, but they're learning from what hasn't worked. And their pitching is the best it's been since everyone was healthy. So it could be a lot worse.
