It's been five years now since Topps started bringing back Heritage High Number for a late-season release, and so far the results have been fine. I mean, it's Heritage Update, and it's a chance to fill in the blanks left by the at-times bold choices in player selection in Heritage proper. The set hit shelves on Tuesday, and by Thursday afternoon my local Wax-Mart already had them in stock. Ye gods.
Here's two hanger boxes of the stuff. Like usual, I'll keep a running tally of the 'updated' cards that already need an Update
Box #1:
566- Jonathan Lucroy. Outdated Cards #1. One card in. Lucroy is now catching for the Chicago Cubs, and doing a nice job of it.
661- Kyle Gibson
547- J.A. Happ. 3 cards in and we have our first Yankee. Not bad.
647- Josh Fuentes. Yeah, you're gonna see a lot of rookies that were big for a week in April or May when this product was in development.
529- Brian Dozier
632: Francisco Liriano. This guy has more lives than most cats
525- Justus Sheffield.
615- Skye Bolt. One of the coolest names in baseball
527- Jorge Alfaro. Great looking card, and it's got updated Marlins hats
634- Asdrubal Cabrera. Outdated Cards #2. Asdrubal is now back in Washington for the stretch.
544- Daniel Murphy. Dude looks weird without a beard
645- Tanner Roark. Outdated Cards #3- Reds traded him to Oakland at the deadline.
559- Jeurys Familia
657- Matt Moore. Dude was doing awesome in Detroit before one of his usual injuries sidelined him for the rest of the year
562- Wade Miley. How about this guy's career renaissance???
668- Leury Garcia. Saw him hit a grandy a few weeks ago
704- HUNTER PENCE. Of all short printed base cards, this one was one of the two I was specifically looking for, and thank god I got it.
Rookie Performers of Keston Hiura, which is a nice get
548- Adam Ottavino CHROME PARALLEL, #'D TO 999. This is awesome. I usually get stuck with Cardinals parallels, but to get a Yankee one? Awesome!
Now and Then insert of Nolan Arenado
691- David Freese. Urgh.
607- Omar Narvaez
523- Carter Kieboom
508- Brendan Rodgers. Would be a nicer rookie if he stayed healthy
614- Austin Riley RC. There we go
554- Tim Beckham. Cheater
652- RICHARD LOVELADY. STILL the best name in baseball. Sorry, Skye Bolt, I was wrong earlier.
568- Nate Eovaldi. I guess Boston didn't learn from the Yankees about signing this guy to a long-term deal...
642- Curt Casali. Has one of the best walk-up songs in baseball.
551- Ian Kinsler. Really wish he was doing better for San Diego this year.
636- Yandy Diaz
528- Joe Kelly
630- Jung Ho Kang. Sort of outdated, because they released him, but...he hasn't signed with anybody
520- MANNY MACHADO. One of the two cards to get in this set.
620- Dwight Smith Jr.
Box #2-
694- Ryan Brasier. Card # is super small on this card alone for some reason
604- Nate Lowe RC. The lesser of the 'Lowe Bros'
501- Michael Chavis RC. That's a much better one
572- Clay Buchholz
671- Max Moroff
533- Jon Duplantier. Again, rookies who were big in April are ALL OVER this product.
663- Brett Gardner. Gardy wasn't in Heritage proper??
565- Matt Davidson, who hasn't played this year
660- Jake Cave
553- Marwin Gonzalez
651- Martin Maldonado. Outdated Card #3- This Royals card is two teams ago for Machete. He was traded first to the Cubs, then to the Astros. So this year, he's played for the 2015 Champs, the 2016 Champs and the 2017 Champs. And at this rate, he might be playing for the 2019 Champs as well.
534- BRYCE HARPER. Thank you, Topps, for not short printing this card as well.
637- Ji-Man Choi
516- Eloy Jimenez RC. Nice
626- Eric Lauer
545- Troy Tulowitzki, a sendoff card for a landmark SS.
Cloth Sticker of Victor Robles
717- Ryan Helsey RC/SP. Not bad.
Power and Passion combo of Yadi and Goldy. THERE'S my Cardinals cards.
Award Winners of Steve Pearce
641- Matt Barnes
535- JT Realmuto. Another one I'm glad they didn't SP
638- Avisail Garcia
503- Michael Brantley, who's having a comeback year for the ages
623- Rio Ruiz
522- AJ Pollock. Great looking card.
618- Matt Adams
574- Craig Kimbrel. Hell, they even had room for a Kimbrel Cubs card? Awesome!
673- Hansel Robles
583- John Brebbia
682- Charlie Culberson, still bench player extraordinaire in Atlanta
591- Christian Walker
690- Scott Alexander. What a stache.
601- Drew Pomeranz. Outdated Card #4- he's now in Milwaukee
700- Nick Kingham. Outdated Card #5, he's now in Toronto.
Solid stuff from High Number. Got a lot of the base cards I was looking for, though I still need to find the Cutch SP. Good enough to hold me over til Archives comes out.
