So. Needless to say, the Nationals won't be repeating in 2020.
I dunno, I feel like the 2019 Nationals WS win was something we needed in that glittering instance that doesn't owe itself to longevity. Yes, it's a feel good team taking down all these formidable teams like LA, St. Louis and Houston. Good for the little guy! And now that it's 2020, and the underdogs are no longer starting-the-season underdogs and more 'they used to be bad but LOOK AT THEM GO NOW' teams like San Diego and Chicago, we really don't need a team like the Nats anymore.
The amusing part is they're still kind of good in places. Both Trea Turner and Juan Soto are having excellent, MVP-caliber seasons. Max Scherzer and Patrick Corbin are still having consistent, strikeout-friendly years. The carousel of veteran bench options like Josh Harrison, Brock Holt, Eric Thames and Asdrubal Cabrera is mostly working this year. But...really, the veteran-heavy presence of this team has now sort of spoiled things on a full season of it, and a lot of these guys are either struggling or injured. And the youth brought in to replace them aren't ready, and are struggling along with them.
It's sad, because while Trea Turner was pretty good last year, he's reached his peak potential this season, with 9 steals, a .358 average, 27 RBIs and 13 doubles. The Nats are pushing for Turner to get into the MVP race, which is the equivalent of a Farrelly Brothers film pushing for acting nominations at the Oscars [man if only there were a really infuriating punchline lying around somewhere]. Turner will be facing off against Fernando Tatis, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman for top honors, so I wish him the best of luck, but I sincerely hope his huge year amounts to longevity, even if it isn't with Washington.
Btw, my spitefulness towards the Nats has nothing to do with the Washington Football Team slaughtering my Eagles after an impressive start from Carson Wentz. No sir.
Anyway the Nats suck and I hope Ron Rivera-I MEAN UH Dave Martinez, uh...trips over his shoelace or something.
[I'm not serious. I swear.]
Coming Tomorrow- Speaking of middle infielders singlehandedly lifting mediocre squads...uh...a guy who probably wishes he was still in Minnesota right now.
