It All Goes Back to Sir Didi
Yes, I realize there are flashier players on the team right now, but in terms of consistency, likability and durability, I don't think there's anyone on this Yankees squad right now quite like Didi Gregorius. I never thought we'd have two face-of-the-team-type shortstops in a row.
And yes, it is definitely true that Aaron Judge sells more t-shirts and hits more home runs, and Giancarlo Stanton is on more Nike ads or whatever, but as a spokesman for the team? Didi's the greatest. Have you SEEN the man's twitter. The guy gets so excited about how well the team's doing, and how great his teammates are, that it's worth scrolling through political crap on an average twitter feed. He's also off to a fantastic start with a few home runs, plays some great defensive shortstop, and the fans absolutely love him. This fanbase, one that boos Stanton even if he doesn't have a good day, could NEVER turn on Didi. Never in a million years.
With the way the team is going, there's an undercurrent of 'maybe we should hit 100+ home runs and then we'll win', but you sacrifice good fielding and good average hitting for that. And I don't think Didi believes in that, as he's a well-rounded player who balances all of his abilities, and doesn't let his ability to hit long balls overpower him. He's the anti-Judge, in a way, and he might have more staying power than the big man in the long run.
Anyway, he's leading the charge so far this season. Hopefully the rest of the team will start performing as well as he is.
Coming Tomorrow- This is his seventh season, and he's already accomplished so much in that time. Now...he looks to get a bigger contract, and he'll do that by outdoing his MVP year.
