Custom Card of the Day: Quentin Edition

 

This design is one of my favorite Topps designs ever. When I first saw it as a kid, I thought it was a cool set, similar to the 1982 football release. I still love it, to this day. I think I've made a 1981 custom with every team. Here are the only exceptions, which you'll probably be seeing soon.

• Astros. This is obvious, because they don't have too many amazing players, sad to say. Maybe if there's a prospect that comes up and amazes everyone, I'll do one of him.
• A's. Another team that doesn't have many good players. They have a lot of rookies this year. I could do a Jarrod Parker or a Ryan Cook. Or I might fall back on Kurt Suzuki.
• Braves. This a is a shocker. I've done a million Braves customs, especially of their prospects, but not an 81? This blows my mind. I'll probably do one of these soon.
• Marlins. It's an expansion team, so no sweat. I have a lot to choose from, anyway, since I've only done Reyes and Buehrle. I have a Giancarlo Stanton on the workbench, so maybe a Bonifacio or a LoMo?
• Mets. Another shocker, since, in my opinion, I've been leaning toward the Mets a lot lately. A lot of my family are Mets fans, and while I'm not a fan, I can still respect them. That being said, they don't have much other than the big guns. I guess I could do one of the younger ones, like a Dillon Gee or an Ike Davis.
• Nationals. I could try this one, being that an Expos one would be a little too obvious. Like with the Marlins, I have a lot to choose from, but their big guns have already been customized this year.
• Pirates. I kinda need to do more Pirates now that they're in the lead, so this would be a wise idea. Not too many stars, however. A Joel Hanrahan or a Neil Walker wouldn't hurt.
• Royals. Aside from Hosmer, Moustakas and...no one else, there isn't much star power. Of course, I could do a Billy Butler, eventually.
• Tigers. Another shocker, seeing as how many of them I made last year. Several options, though I don't know which one I'll do, since I did most of their starters last year. 
• White Sox. I have done too many Sox customs lately, and this one might wait awhile. But I have a lot of options.

 So 10 teams have yet to be customized in the 1981 design. Of course, they might not all be done this year.

Coming Tomorrow- Oh no! 7/12 me is out of customs! Have to make more. One might be a Giancarlo Stanton. 

Vintage Wax Break- 1981 Fleer Baseball Stickers

A friend of a friend gave me some card stuff he didn't need anymore. It included:

• Complete Set of 1986 Topps
• Signed Rangers Puck
• 1956 Topps Yankees team card
• Box of 1981 Fleer Stickers.

I had never seen those stickers, so I opened the box. Not many stars, so I'll give a pack by pack rundown, and one highlight per pack

1. Jim Palmer. Pack also included Greg Luzinski and Davey Lopes
2. Johnny Bench. Also included Bill Buckner, Jose Cruz, Looooou Piniella
3. Don Sutton. Also included Ron Cey, Tommy John
4. Rod Carew. Also included Sparky Lyle, Dan Quisenberry, Tug McGraw
5. Carl Yazstremski. Also included Bucky Freakin Dent
6. It's a four way tie! This was the best pack I opened- featured Mike Schimdt, George Brett, Willie Stargell and Nolan Ryan.
7. ...followed by the worst pack. The highlight was Dave Kingman, I guess.
8. Another Four Way Tie! Jim Rice, Rickey Henderson, Rich Gossage and Reggie Jackson!
9. Alan Trammell. Also included Dave Parker.
10. Bruce Sutter. Also included Graig Nettles, Al Oliver
11. Reggie Jackson. Also featured Willie Randolph
12. Reggie Smith
13. Andre Dawson. Also featured Tony Perez.
14. It's a tie! Steve Carlton and Robin Yount.
15. Rollie Fingers. Also featured JR Richard, Ken Griffey
16. Cesar Cedeno.
17. Joe Morgan. Also included Dave Concepcion
18. Pete Rose. Also featured Paul Molitor, George Foster.

I ripped half the box, so I could save the other half for something else coming up. But overall, nice product. The photos aren't the best, but hey, it's 1981 fleer. What were you expecting, the MoMa?

I might go out later for some Series 2, if my target actually has some for once.

What's up with the Custom Cards

So many of you are wondering why I put up a Jeter 81 card last night. Well, turns out, my Photoshopping skills need to be put to the test. Awhile back I said I'd be doing a lot more retro cards with current players, and now I'm going to finally take a crack at it. As you can see by my Texiera up here, they are okay, but I've been following Bad Wax's How to. I seem to be getting the hang of it, and I wanted to share with you guys, and girls.

I might be leaving the 81 design behind and going after other classic designs. Also, non Yankees might be getting the custom card treatment (I'm doing this since barely anyone else likes the Bombers in the blogosphere).

BTW- I may or may not get a pack or two before Saturday. On Saturday, I will be leaving for vacation to Lake George NY. During my time there, I'll also be going to the Hall of Fame, which definitely means cards.
