The ToppsTown Experiment: Part 2.5

A few weeks ago, I reported that I had began my quest to finish Football's ToppsTown set. I also said that I had about 20 cards left until I completed the set. And that aggrivated me. Because, as I said, nobody gives up what you need...without a little extra involved.

Needless to say, about 2 minutes ago I checked my TT account, and noticed there was a sudden urge of points in the left hand corner. I check my binder- I have all 172 cards, after making a desperate trade for Larry Fitzgerald.

I was excited. I was now officially ready for 2011's card releases to begin.

This means I don't have to go to ToppsTown for a while, but at least the few weeks I had on the site for football counted, a bit.

Just so you're wondering, no I haven't gotten cards in a while, being that today's snow was so bad all the schools in my area were closed. I'll get some sooner or later- I'm interested in the new Magic Football set. Mainly because of the design, but I also love that wrapper. And who doesn't?

The ToppsTown Experiment: Part Two

Months ago I explained my quest to complete ToppsTown's 230 card Baseball Virtual Set. And it worked, and the ToppsTown Experiment post was my most ever viewed post. But last month, I recieved in a box from Topps, a Hobby Box of Topps Football. In every pack, 1 TT card. That means 36 TT cards per hobby box. For a month, I didn't do anything with them. Last night, however, I figured...let's give this ago.

Instead of a 230 card virtual set for Football, there's a 172 card set. And I happily entered my codes one by one until all 36 were entered. By the end of the night I had 139 cards successfully uploaded, not including countless amounts of doubles (I got 5 copies of Kevin Kolb. What did I ever do to deserve this?). Today, I began trading, helplessly.

Of course, like the baseball project, most traders on the site wanted to rid me of the only copy of Matt Hasselbeck or Brett Favre, for players that I already had. Screw the cards that I needed- who cares about that. All those stupid people want is Brady, Manning, Peterson, Favre.

This morning, and as of right now, I have 146 out of 172. I have a little bit more to go, but if those stupid teens keep pushing to rid me of Troy Aikman, this Topps Town Experiment will go down as a failure.

The ToppsTown Experiment

Everyone has one.

A guilty pleasure, an item that many people are tempted to love, even though they're not supposed to. One of my guilty pleasures is David Bowie music. But then again, this isn't a David Bowie blog.

Another one of my guilty pleasures is ToppsTown. Two months ago I signed up for ToppsTown, just to redeem codes and see what the fuss was about. I inadvertedly entered a community of kids and teenagers whose sole purpose was to waste time on the internet.

Wait a minute, I thought, I waste time on the internet! I'll fit right in with these guys!

Fitting in wasn't what kept me there. Shrouded behind the redeeming codes part was a whole 330 card set. Redeem cards, build the set. The set was infuriating to build, because the one card you needed to trade for involved giving up a few Legends cards you already had. Granted, I WANTED 12 Derek Jeters, but I only had 2 of them. So I could only give up 1 Jeter in a trade, but they probably wanted more than a Jeter. They wanted a Ty Cobb, or a Cy Young...and just for a Joba Chamberlian, or Luis Castillo!

Man, people were even giving up Jeter, A-rod and a couple of legends...and asking for low profile amatuers like Martin Prado and Ian Stewart. There were stupid people in the ToppsTown community, but, come on, they were teens!

Nevertheless, one month ago I asked for a simple trade: What I need for doubles of what you need. And it worked . Last month I finished my ToppsTown set.

But it wasn't over. I still had all those Series 2 codes coming my way, so I just redeemed them just for the hell of it. And I got the same cards I HAD GIVEN UP THOSE DOUBLES FOR!

It was a troubling experiment, but long story short all 330 virtual cards that probably don't mean anything in the blogger world are mine. And even though I will never own them, it still felt pretty good to finish the set, finally getting the Luis Castillo and AJ Burnett that I needed.

So that was one guilty pleasure that paid off for me.
