Met-ter Off Dead
One of the things I learned from spending a week on the beach with my Mets-fan cousins last month was that Jeff McNeil is, apparently, a player for the New York Mets.
I dunno, maybe living in Philly airs out the Met-related news due to lack of...any, but Jeff McNeil has been their big rookie push this year, and he's been doing a nice job playing second after Asdrubal Cabrera left for a better team- I MEAN PHILLY. Him and Amed Rosario have formed a nice little young double play duo, and them, Austin Jackson, Nimmo, and Conforto are some of the only standouts of a damp, soggy Mets lineup, bogged down by injuries and trades.
The pitching's still pretty alright, though. Robert Gsellman's closing games, Jacob de Grom's making a Cy Young push, and Thor and Wheeler are still great. So while, pitching wise, this isn't necessarily a bad team, it's failing because it's not top-heavy, and because there's not a ton of power to lift them past the three top teams in the NL East. They're also not far in the standings from the Marlins, which says all you need to know here.
I don't know if there's a ton of optimism to be had with this team. There's a few pieces that could wield the future, but there's not enough emphasis on leading the farm system here, or giving the youth their chance- Jose Reyes and David Wright are still big pieces of this team after all, and the team is still trying to hold onto their 2015-era good graces, even though that team has mostly evaporated, at least offensively.
I just hope that Jeff McNeil gets to play for a non-disappointing Mets team someday.
Coming Tomorrow- His team chased the Yankees this past weekend.
