Will September Kill the Yankees?
Right now, the Yankees are in the middle of a series with the Oakland Athletics. Is it going well? I can't tell you, I'm writing this on Monday. But...knowing who's got the momentum, I can only assume it's not exactly a blowout weekend for the Yankees. I mean, let's face it- they dropped games to Detroit and Chicago recently. They're trying not to lose steam, but when you're giving up runs to the White Sox, there aren't that many other conclusions to be made.
J.A. Happ, at the very least, is helping matters by pitching beautifully, winning 5 of his 6 starts in the Bronx, and improving on his Toronto ERA by keeping his NY ERA below 4. He's the exact kind of consistent pitcher we needed to pick up, and he's been wonderful for us so far. And yes, Lance Lynn has had more strikeouts than Happ, but he's also given up more runs, so he's slowly turning back into his Minnesota self, which isn't great.
The core of the lineup is still great as well, with Torres and Andujar getting back to dominance, Andrew McCutchen beginning to heat up, Adeiny Hechavarria playing great defensive shortstop, and Luke Voit hitting like mad. Yes, some of the original core is fighting injuries, and Gary Sanchez has been less than perfect in his return from the DL, but they're trying their damnedest, and they know it's going to take a ton of power to take on Boston (if they do get the Wild Card spot).
Again, this week, and a few series' in the future, are worrying me, because they'll be playing a lot of teams, like Boston twice, that I'm not sure if they can win against. This A's series is bad enough, because if this is any indication of how the WC game will go, then ugh (I'm only assuming it's going badly, remember I wrote this on Monday). But the Boston series' might take away momentum right before we have to play the A's again. As great as this team has been, I'm very worried about our playoff chances.
Still...if they want to keep fighting, they have every right to.
Coming Tonight: A New York Met that isn't Jacob de Grom and isn't injured.
