Of All People, Christian Villanueva?

...So it shouldn't be a shock to you that the Padres are playing pretty poorly right now.

The lineup is tanking, with only Eric Hosmer trying to do any substantial leadership work (in Wil Myers' absence). The pitching is...a weird case, with predominantly poor performances, bookended by a back-to-normal Tyson Ross and a surprisingly cool rookie named Joey Lucchesi. But there are so many holes in the roster that it shows, especially when they play someone like the Diamondbacks or Rockies, who are ruling the division this year.

And then, to punctuate how weird this frigging team is this year...you have Christian Villanueva. A guy making a full-season rookie effort this year. He's already had a 3-home-run game, and currently leads the team in homers, with eight. He's playing some alright third base, and he's the sole thing to talk about on this team.

Before this...nobody knew who he was, or where he played. And now he's singlehandedly bringing the Padres into the spotlight every time he hits a home run. That...is weird.

And the sad thing is that'll probably be the extent of the Padres' excursions to relevance. Unless Lucchesi keeps it up, or Hosmer gets hurt or something, 2018 will be the year that Christian Villanueva happened in San Diego. And that's about it, I think, unless I'm quite wrong. And it's April, so I could be wrong.

Coming Tomorrow- Hardest throwing pitcher in New York, suiting up currently against the defending champs.
