The Yankees vs. Injuries (Round Two)
Right when the big pieces of the Yankees' core get back and start killing it...more people wind up back on the IL. You can't make this up.
So now the Yanks have lost...Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Edwin Encarnacion, Luke Voit, CC Sabathia, Gary Sanchez. Plus, Gio Urshela's sore, Didi Gregorius had a ball nearly break his wrist, and Gleyber Torres is DHing because of a possible injury there. So once again, this team is in tatters.
...but, seeing as they got through it the first time on the strength of organizational depth alone, let's see how they can take it this time.
For instance- with Hicks and Stanton out, now the OF becomes a Judge-Gardy-Tauchman/Maybin combination, where literally any combination of the three is a fantastic one, as they're all playing super well. With Voit and Bird out, they're trying both Mike Ford as a temporary 1st Baseman as well as moving DJ LeMahieu to first, and letting Breyvic Valera cover 2nd for Torres. With Sanchez out, Austin Romine is starting and playing well, and Kyle Higashioka is surprisingly doing alright as backup. They've been using Cameron Maybin as DH, which...in my opinion is slightly counterintuitive, but DH is not a bad position to have freedom with.
And while the starting pitching had hit a snag late last month, they seem to be recovering, with German still trucking along, Tanaka doing the best he can, and Paxton slowly lowering his ERA again. I'd honestly be down with trying another starting option rather than doing the Chad Green thing, but...is anybody ready? Is it worth getting Chance Adams to start a game, or rushing Deivi Garcia? Is it worth grabbing some low-rent free agent to work some innings late? Or do we wait until Sevvy and/or CC come back?
I mean, this is a lot to ask about a team that's honestly doing an awesome job, and in first, but...if I didn't have these concerns, I'd be blindly letting a tattered team like this go right into the playoffs and get obliterated by Houston. I know that the Yankees can soldier through this, but I worry.
Until then...go Yanks.
Coming Tomorrow- He's one of the few starters on his team that's remained in the same spot amongst a whole bunch of flux, and thank god for that- he's still pretty damn good, too.
