The Magnificent Sevvy

Yes, it's fun to talk about Didi Gregorius absolutely slaying the ball, and Aaron Judge having a much more well-rounded sophomore year, but...how about Luis Severino? How about the guy who had such an incredible season in 2017...proving that he's not a fluke.

Now, it may not be very difficult to assume how powerful the guy is, as at this point the case can be made that the real fluke season was his torrid 2016 appearances, coming in between a powerful rookie year in '15 and a dominant full year in 2017. So far, he's got a low enough ERA, a ton of strikeouts, a 4-1 record, and has given this Yankees team something they've only dreamed of with CC Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka...a consistent, reliable ace.

Luis Severino's presence in the lineup may be the first since possibly Mike Mussina to reliably put the rotation together at his feet. Simply because his materials and pitches are so deadly and unhittable that he could build an entire career out of them, and the Yankees might be along the ride for that.

The Yanks had an eight-game winning streak, sweeping the Angels and Twins. Yes, they lost last night, to the Astros, and...you could kind of see that coming. The Astros are one of the few equals the Yankees have in baseball this year, besides the Red Sox. They're powerful, unrelenting, and crafty to the last second. The Yankees will probably get at least one game out of this Houston series, and it'll probably be the one that Sevvy starts.

Coming Tonight: Fine. One of the two young, powerful stars out of Atlanta.
