It was really only a matter of time before I made an Alex Avila custom, considering the season he's having. But if he wins the Rookie of the Year award this year, the comparisons will not be to Johnny Bench: they will be to Geovany Soto. And yes Cubs fans, that is a bad thing.
I am a member of the minority that thinks Geovany Soto should not have won the NL Rookie of the Year award in 2008. There were more deserving Rookies in the conference, such as Jay Bruce, Kosuke Fukudome, Clayton Kershaw and Joey Votto. Of course, I am also part of the majority that thinks Chris Coghlan didn't deserve his ROY in 2009, but now I'm rambling. Back to Soto- he played a decent enough season at his position back in 2008, but it wasn't his first season. The same thing goes for Alex Avila- he debuted in 2009, and has been playing the position since. So even if he was nominated to the All Star team, does he deserve it over others in his division, such as Michael Pineda, and others that I can't think of right now? I don't think so.
Still he's a great player, but not the Rookie of the Year.
Coming Tomorrow- He began the season in Houston, and will finish it in Atlanta.
